On November 1st, 2020 my son Sean and I were deep bottom fishing aboard our boat AIKO H. While we were fishing outside Barbers Point, we hooked up to an unusual fish in 135 fathoms of water. I caught this huge puffer fish using a Penn reel and 60-lb test line, using aku belly as bait.
Sean and I did not know the species except that it was a puffer fish (fugu). We went to Times Super Market in Aiea, Oahu to get this unusual Puffer fish weighed.
Thank you to HAWAII FISHING NEWS for identifying it as a Blunthead Puffer fish. They created a new category and this 3.85-lb catch is a new official state record.
Mahalo and Happy New Year!
