The waves were rough, and the bait was not biting great. I had tried for hours to catch something worth sliding before the sun went down, and I managed to catch three kupipi, leaving one pole without bait. My 5-year-old son had caught a small Christmas wrasse for me earlier in the day, to use for bait. I hadn't used It yet because it was small for the rough water and didn't want to waste a good bait. As it got late, I had no choice but to slide my son's Christmas wrasse ... first, because he asked; and second because I wanted bait in the water. I decided I would wait until the slack tide to slide it, as that would be later in the night and around the time I would lay down and chill. At around 11:45 p.m. the tide was on the change, and so down went the Christmas wrasse. I used my 13-foot Nitro Heavy with a Penn reel loaded with 80-lb Ande line. Next thing I knew, it was 2:30 a.m. and my ratchet was going off, my brakes were smoking and the fish at the end of my line was taking me down to the last ten wraps in my reel! Thirty-three minutes of fighting this heavy beast and he was on the rocks, landed by me, my wife and my son.
