I reside on the east side of Maui, in Hana, where I was born and raised. One recent weekend, I took my ohana camping in Hana in hopes of bringing up some ulua. On Thursday night, I was able to bring up two good-sized ulua weighing 43.8-lbs and 55-lbs. On Friday, we spent the day catching bait and flew our lines out in the evening. We had a few
strikes but no ulua until about 3:30 a.m. on Saturday. My nephew landed his first ulua, which weighed 17 lbs. We spent the rest of the day chilling, catching bait and celebrating my baby girl, who made
eight months that day. That night, hoping for some good luck, I cast
my daughters pole. Sure enough, I got a big strike around 7:30 p.m. The fish put up a good fight for about half an hour. It got stuck on the
reef a couple of times, but I managed to free it. With the help of my boys, Jun Pua, Holdan Estrella, Robert ODell and Quinton Vida-Lono, I was able to bring up my 100-plus ulua! This fish weighed 105.2 lbs on the certified
scale at Maui Sporting Goods. Stoked is an understatement to describe my feelings after bringing up this dude.I was blessed and grateful to have had my family there to witness such an amazing, monumental
moment in my life. I want to dedicate this ulua to my dad, Richard Pua Sr. He is the reason that I am who I am today. I wish he had been there physically to experience this special moment with me. I miss him every day. I love you, Dad! Until the next ulua, aloha!
