On Saturday, September 17, 2016, the boys and I were fishing/camping on the north end of Lanai. When we first got down there, we drove to our usual spot. But the trade winds were ripping through the beach, and sand was blasting us the whole time. I had brought my oldest daughter (4 years old) down, too, and I didnt want her to get blasted. So we ended up at a spot where the kiawe trees blocked the wind. We fished this spot many times but never caught anything, so we kind of lost some excitement to fish, thinking we wouldnt hook up.
I was the last to set up my poles, so I ended up setting my poles far left of our camp.
We had all kinds of bait out including tohei, puhi, tako and even a live toau. I decided to slide down frozen akule I got from Fely.
Around midnight we had our fist strike. Zinga! It was on for about five minutes but cut my 250-lb test leaderline.
After that I was contemplating whether to recast or go to sleep. Luckily I decided to recast and slide down another frozen akule.
As the sun was rising, I was lying down thinking, Ahh, now gotta break down. But as soon as I closed my eyes, zinga! I had another strike on the same pole!
I jumped out of my sleeping cot, almost flipping my daughter who was sleeping next to me. Bruddah Bert and I were the first to the pole.
The initial run nearly took all the 60-lb Sufix line. I thought the fish was a goner. Ten minutes in, I started gaining line back. The rest is 100-Plus history! . . . Marcom
