100-plus Weight Angler Location Date
Ulua 101 lbs 6 oz Donny Medeiros, Jr. North Shore, Oahu 08/13/16

On a windy yet beautiful Saturday evening (August 13, 2016), as the sun was simmering into the ocean, I was getting ready to take a survivor man shower when William (Boy) Martinezs pole took off ratcheting. As he was fighting his fish, I was looking for my GoPro to get some footage of the action. Boom! A loud clang of my bell was followed by a roaring ratchet. I skipped across the big boulders on the reef to attend to my pole, and the fight was on. I locked down the drag, and the fish began to change direction. I started cranking the reel, gaining a lot of line back. Then the fish took off again, taking all of my progress right back. Tight line, tight biceps and a will to not give up were on my side. After seeing Boy land his fish, my motivation was even greater. After a 30- to 45-minute battle back and forth, the fish finally got tired as it neared the 10-foot cliff. My arms were shot, but I managed to boost the fish close to the edge where Joseph Laa was able to gaff the fish. He was assisted by Boy. They lifted the fish up on the flats safely, and the fight was over! Looking at the fish, we were all stoked. Boy measured the girth of the tail with his hand, looked up said, This fish probably just made 100 lbs! I was full of excitement and smiling ear to ear. It turned out that he was right. The weight was 101.6 lbs. Special thanks to my gang, who was there with the assist! It wouldn't have been possible to land the fish of a lifetime without them. . . . Don
