My walu was caught near South Point on 80-lb tackle and weighed at the Honokohau scales. It came in at 125.5-lb, with a length of 75 inches.
We were on a 3-day holoholo trip with just the boys. We had caught a few ono and tied up on the mooring for the night. After about 2 hours of bottomfishing, we started catching Ika and I was pulling one over the rail when the deep line went screaming. After about a 15-20 minute battle, we got it to the surface and couldnt tell if it was some kind of GMO Kaku or what.
After further inspection, it showed to be a gigantic walu and possibly the biggest, so we boated the fish. As soon as we got back to Kona, we weighed it and sure enough it shattered the current state record by 30 pounds. We celebrated with some choice champagne and high-fives all around.
