When I am not playing the bass for the group Ekolu, you can usually find me fishing in front of my hale in Paukukalo, Maui. During the midafternoon of July 17, I was throwing net for some live bait and was blessed with three large manini. I decided to cast my pole and slide some bait. Within 30 minutes, my pole bent and I had a 63.4-lb ulua on shore. I was stoked! The ulua was later officially weighed at New Maui Fishing Supply. I cast my pole out again, slid another live bait, and the pole went off! This time the fish spit hook, but I couldnt stay and try again because I had to play a gig that evening. At the gig, I told the lead singer of Ekolu, Lukela Keala, about my catch and the spit hook. I told him, The partner is out there. Watch! Im gonna catch em. On Sunday, I fished the whole day and night with my friends Cody Walker and Syliss Keahi. We all slept overnight under the hale but caught nothing. On Monday, July 19, the day before I was scheduled to leave for Las Vegas to play at a concert, I was blessed to land a hammah of a fishan ulua weighing in at 109.8 lbs! This monster was officially weighed at New Maui Fishing Supply by Fito Vargas. That morning, I had woken up at 6:45 a.m. I reeled up my two poles to change bait because I still had live bait. I cast the same pole that caught the 63.4-pounder in the same spot as that catch and slid down my bait. Within 10 minutes, I heard my bell going off. I ran to the pole, grabbed it and set the hook. As I was lifting my pole high, I could see splashes in the distance and a tail waving at me. I started boosting. As the ulua was coming to shore on the low tide, I knew it was a dude because I could see the fins and tail out of the water. When the fish was almost on shore, I told my friends, Cody and Syliss, who were on the shoreline waiting, to grab my rubline and pull the fish onto the sand. As soon as I saw how huge this ulua was, I had a feeling it was going to top 100 lbs. I threw my hands up in the air and said, Mahalo, Ke Akua for all your blessings! I will want to continue to thank Ke Akua for the continued blessings that help to feed the village. It was the most amazing feeling to be able to land this once in-a-lifetime fish. I am still in awe and truly humbled. I would like to dedicate this awesome hana paa in loving memory to my boss, Francis Tom Sun. Rest in love, Uncle Francis.
