100-plus Weight Angler Location Date
Ulua 101 lbs Melva Hiroyama MacKenzie Park, Hawaii 08/19/82

Dear Chuck, Enclosed is a picture of a friend of mine that recently was fortunate to land one of the biggest ulua of his lifetime. His name is Melva Hiroyama (electrician) of Hilo. He came down to McKenzie Park one Sunday afternoon as Pauline and I were taking up our lines and making ready to pack up and go home. I had slid down the night before a live enenue that weighed about a pound. When I brought up my lines, the enenue was still kicking and full of fight, so I gave the fish to Melva. He promptly slid the live bait back down. The time was about 11:30 a.m. In the meantime, Pauline was still practicing her casting. Melva cast a second pole and was making ready to slide another bait when his rod went off. The time was 12:30 p.m. By the looks of it, the fish was very, very big and was fighting far out and close to the surface. It took Melva about 35 minutes to land the big fish. The fish was on the rocks by 1:05 p.m. It weighed in at 101 lbs on the Hilo Casting Club scale. Talk about good luck. He hadn't been down at the beach for two hours and already had a ulua over 100 lbs. This wasn't his first big ulua. He had hooked and landed a ulua that was even bigger than this one. That one had weighed 113 lbs. It was landed August 26, 1978. At this time he has over 1,050 lbs of fish for 1982, and is second to Craig Nakaishi in total weight. Following uery closely is Pauline Sugimoto at third place. The fish are biting and they all seem to be giants by all standards. Take care and keep a tight line. Sincerely, Barry Sugimoto and Pauline Sugimoto Hilo, Hawai'i
